Honestly, I was struggling with a number trimmers before I could get this list completed. And I know how it feels looking at grass trimmed unevenly, leaving your garden an unaesthetic landscape.

Pros
  • Relatively quiet

  • Powerful

  • Solid construction

  • EasyFeed button

  • Quick and simple operation

Cons
  • Eat a lot of batteries

This particular trimmer/edger has the Easyfeed to advance your line in a click. The unit is super easy to use even you are new to it.

It's a real nice-looking unit that feels quite solid in the hands. The machine runs on lithium batteries 20V which is pretty sufficient for trimming.

In my opinion, this unit is lightweight even with the battery on. It feels comfortable when I lifted with one hand. During the operation, I noticed the noise was not that bad of an irritation. It sounded easy with not many high pitches when hitting the grass.

Coming in the box are two batteries for quick replacing. The assembly challenged me a bit at the beginning, but once all were set, everything was a breeze. You can easily convert the unit from a trimmer to an edger.

When you need the tool to cut faster, use the boost power feature to double the speed. It can handle thick weeds, tall grass, as well as delicate grass.

Pros
  • Tiltable head for sloped terrain

  • Easy to switch between trimming and edging

  • Lightweight

  • Spacer guard to protect plants and flowers

Cons
  • The wire spools stink

  • Battery life is not great

This Worx allows you to put down the debris guard with your foot to get the best angle to trim. That's why I list it as the best for inclines.

Trust me; I've had this unit for 2 years. The only that's wrong is some scratches on it which are mainly from me. I was a bit doubtful about the locking movement of the head, but it has not been an issue.

Particularly, the head can tilt 90 degrees. You just need to use your foot to adjust the angle. That helps you get to even tough places and trim on sloped terrains with ease.

To switch between trimming the edging mode, locate the diagram on the stick and spin it in place then lock it in place.

One of the thing that I have found is sometimes when I don't pull it all the way through; it won't activate the edging mode. So, you want to make sure the head is fully in line when you want to enter the edging mode.

Best for Large Areas (Cordless): CRAFTSMAN V20 String Trimmer / Edger

Pros
  • Extended run time

  • Ergonomic adjustable length pole

  • Well built

  • Impressive battery life

Cons
  • A bit tricky automatic line feeding mechanism

  • Not powerful on thicker grass

This Craftsman 20V is pretty neat with hassle-free assembly. There is only one screw required and you need to put on the guard.

The handle of this unit is telescopic. You can twist the lock to get a trimmer for midgets; unlock it to expand about a foot and a haft. It's a good range to reach a wider diameter. I'm 5" 11, and it's comfortable when it's fully extended.

This unit is relatively lightweight because the motor in it is quite small. On the low setting, it's good for light trimming.

On the handle, you can find the two-stage trigger that you can push either way. Everytime the spool slows down and stops, it feeds a bit more twine. So, if you want to keep using at the same time, you have to keep it spinning. Otherwise, you'll go through a lot of string that cutting the material.

On high, it gets through the grass with ease. The battery usage after 15 minutes of use remained for the next 10 minutes. That's pretty much sufficient for a large yard.

Pros
  • Arrive ready

  • Powerful

  • Lightweight

  • Great for seniors

  • Easy pre-wound line to snap on

Cons
  • Use too much line

This is a 6.5-amps unit for trimming that runs 8,000 RPM; edging is 5 amps at 7,700 RPM. That provides a more precise edging ability more than what I expected. It has a telescoping dial for you to adjust to the height you want. This feature is quite convenient for storage.

Also, the handle can be adjusted with a push button. You can hand your hand further apart, or closer together, or anywhere in between.

The housing doesn't move on this unit. If you worry about tangled line, I can tell that won't happen with this unit. You can find an extension cord holder to keep the extension cord in place to prevent it from snagging something.

The line feeds quite well and accomplishes finely in making the grass short. It does a super job on both tall and short growth.

Pros
  • Very versatile

  • Lengthy cord

  • Adjustable assist handle

  • One-step walk-behind edging

  • Good construction

Cons
  • Lack of a tap-to-advance string feature

  • Trigger switch spring is fairly stiff

This trimmer may not be the most powerful electric string trimmer I've ever gone through, but it has the power to cover bigger spaces.

First of all, it features a 5-amp motor provides plenty of power to help you get rid of annoying weeds. It's fairly light, but the cutting is quite generous at 14 inches.

Though it's corded, it's reachable to a larger area compared to other models.

With a push to the button, you can rotate the head to an edger to start whacking weeds. Do the same to convert back to a trimmer.

Better than that, the shaft is made to be extendable. It felt quite comfortable even you are 6-ft tall.

Yet the wheel comes with built-in guide which helps you stay on track while edging. When you edge close to a wall or obstacle, the wheel will lift up.

When you pull the trigger, the line should auto-adjust to the right cutting length. But I noticed the auto-feed doesn't always work. So, sometimes you will need to remove the cap for manual adjustment.

Pros
  • Easy to use

  • Super lightweight

  • Quick switching between trimmer and edger

  • Fast trim

  • Effective auto feed

Cons
  • The string is too thin

  • Gets heavy after a 10-15 minutes

Frankly, this Sun Joe was not in my expected list, but I had a chance to use and evaluate it at my buddy's home.

Not only it's a wacker for heavy weeds, but also super lightweight at 5.1 pounds. With the 4-amp motor, I could feel the cuts are squared and through. It's got a nice 13-inch cut with the ability to bump feed lines when you pump it on the ground, letting the screen come out.

This trimmer cuts weeds fast, easy, and effective. I noticed the length of the line once cut looks quite neat and precise. That has to thanks the convenient auto-feed feature that allows you to cut without an interruption.

You can quickly convert the unit from an edger to a trimmer using the 180 rotating head.

I also love the design that is compact and holdable with one hand. It's as well pretty easy to maneuver this Sun Joe to tight spaces.

How To Choose The Best Electric Edger Trimmer?

There are many factors involved to choose the right lawn edger for you. And I'm here to tell you how to determine the best electric edger trimmer that matches your need.

Type of Edger

Many people with light-duty edging jobs can get by without a dedicated edger.

Mainly, people prefer string trimmers because this type features rotating heads that allow you to trim vertically as well as horizontally.

These are adequate for many areas where you just want to clean up on the surface. Also, the act won't penetrate the soil.

But if you have tougher areas where you need to slice through earth or thick layer of fat, you should consider a dedicated edger.

A dedicated edger features a hard metal blade to give you precise edging ability and sufficient cutting power.

In this article we talk about handheld edgers. You have choices between corded and cordless models.

Cordless trimmers are a bit bulky in the handle but they free you from the power outlet. But if your edging jobs are close to a power source, you might want to get a corded model.

Weight

The mass of the trimmer matters a lot because it is the main cause of fatigues. In my opinion, under 7 pounds is reasonable for a normal user.

But almost electric trimmers today weigh under 6.5, even below 6 pounds. They are relatively light, giving a breeze to your shoulder.

Line Cutting Diameter

It is the size of your garden and weed or grass you are cutting that affect the choice of line cutting diameter.

A trimmer that provides from 10-15 inches of cutting diameter should fit a medium-size yard. For a larger area, you need something above 15 inches and under 18 inches.

Line Feed

The string trimmer line-feed lets you trim weed smoothly. There is a model in this list that has manual line-feed that you need to turn off the unit to unwind the line.

With auto line feed, the changing process will take less time and effort so that your trimming time won't be interrupted. There are models that come with AFS feature that auto releases the trimmer when the line gets too short.

Which Brands Make The Best Electric Edger Trimmer?

Black and Decker

Everyone knows Black and Decker is the top-of-the-line electric tool brand with a large collection of patents. The brand only focuses on the needs of their customers to provide products that cover almost every aspects. Trimmers from Black and Decker are exceptional for the innovation and designs with thoughts in mind.

WORX

It is the innovation that leads WORX to where they are now. The products they have in line always come to life with the utmost practicality and the highest standard. Keeping the needs of customers in mind, WORX has been producing edgers that are hard to find flaws.

FAQs

Do you need an edger trimmer?

Definitely if you have a green yard to manage. I know many of you already own a string trimmer, but it's quite unlikely to use the tool for this particular edging chore. And if you think of edging manually, that's a no for me.

So, yes. I suppose an edger trimmer is a must.

Electric vs. gas edger trimmer?

Well, a gas-powered edger is loud and heavy. And depending on the country, you may need a fuel stabilizer at the end of the season.

Electric trimmers, corded or cordless, are lightweight and they have about three times the life of the old nickel-cadmium. They are variable speed and versatile to be both a trimmer and edger.

How long should an edger trimmer last?

On an average of using around 10 hours a season, a commercial edger trimmer should last 3-4 years. But with proper maintenance, your unit may stay alive up to 6 years.

Can trimmer line break?

I was once got my trimmer line broken because I hit rocks along the lawn perimeter. Anything like paving edge, stones, or hard objects can cause the line to be damaged.

How to maintain electric weed eater?

Keeping a weed eater intact isn't a hard job. Just keep in mind some of the rules:

  • Clean the Carburetor

  • Remove dirt after trimming

  • Clean the filter

  • Clean the spark plug

Conclusion

Using a weed wacker requires some safety rules. I recommend having your safety goggles and gloves on in prior to turning on the unit.
